Doing Things

Movement occurs in a Cause and Effect pattern generated by gradients of Pressure.

When you decide to do something, you are attempting to bring about a specific Effect. The success of your activity benefits from an awareness of the gradients of pressure at play—the Causes that will lead to the Effect you seek.

The Effect you desire exists within a Context: an environment shaped by Forces. These Forces are the pressures acting on that environment.

The word "Design" describes the process of working within a Context to achieve a desired Effect. To design effectively is to understand the Forces at play and allow them to shape your approach.

The Forces in the Context define the Form that the solution must take.

The terminology used in these Maps draw from the terminology used by Christopher Alexander in his work Notes on the Synthesis of Form, which examines how the forces within a context define the shape a solution must take.

Misfit

When a Form is developed that does not fit the shape implied by the Forces at play, it is called "Misfit".

Poor Fit

A Form that partially fits the shape implied by the Forces is a case of 'Poor Fit'—it resolves some pressures but leaves others unaddressed.

Good Fit

A Form that fits the shape implied by the Forces is a 'Good Fit'; if it is the result of intentional strategy and tactics - a design exercise - then it can be said to be a job well done.

Broader Context

As described in the Movement maps: even a good fit will change the Forces in the context and create a new imbalance of pressure that will need to be resolved.
